Why Travel Insurance is so important

One of the most commonly asked questions in relation to travel insurance we get asked:  “if a family member  (that is not insured on the policy) falls ill and i cannot travel as i need to look after her,  will my travel insurance cover the costs?”

Obviously it depends on the exact wording of your Spanish policy.  Key points to check in your policy (Cancellation/Curtailment section)

  • Definition of “close relative” or “family member”: many policies cover cancellation if an immediate family member (spouse, children, parents, sometimes siblings or grandparents) becomes seriously ill, but some restrict it to persons insured on the same policy.
  • Named insured vs. non‑insured: some insurers require the ill person to be an insured under the policy; others still permit cover for an uninsured close relative if the illness prevents you from travelling to care for them.
  • Covered reasons and severity: cover is usually for serious/unexpected illness or hospitalization; routine or pre‑existing conditions may be excluded unless specified.
  • Documentation required: medical certificate or hospital report, proof that travel was not possible, booking receipts, cancellation invoices.
  • Time limits, excesses and limits: there may be a deductible and maximum reimbursement amounts, and you may need to notify the insurer within a set time after learning of the illness.

What to do now

  1. Find the policy wording (cancellation/curtailment and definitions).
  2. Contact your insurer or broker immediately, explain the situation and ask whether an uninsured close relative’s sudden serious illness is a valid reason for cancellation. Ask what documents they require and the timeframe for notification.
  3. Obtain written medical evidence (doctor/hospital letter) showing date and seriousness of the illness and why you must stay.
  4. Keep all booking and payment records and any communications about refunds from providers.

Just one of the reasons why taking out travel insurance every time is so crucial to protect not just your holiday, but for lifes unforseeable situations.
