What to Do If You Encounter a Wildfire While Driving in Spain

Encountering a wildfire while driving can be dangerous. Prioritize safety with these steps:

  1. Stay Calm and Assess the Situation: Keep calm to think clearly. Observe the fire’s location and movement.
  2. Protect Yourself and Passengers: If the fire is nearby and advancing, consider stopping safely and exiting the vehicle if there’s a safe area away from the flames.
  3. Alert Authorities: Call 112, Spain’s emergency services number, immediately. Provide clear details of your location and the fire’s status.  Don´t presume someone has already called.
  4. Follow Official Instructions: Listen to emergency broadcasts or instructions from authorities regarding evacuation routes and safety measures.
  5. Move to Safety: If it’s safe to do so, drive away from the fire, preferably towards designated evacuation zones or areas less affected by the fire.
  6. Document the Incident: Take photos or videos if safe, to document the scene, which can be useful for insurance claims.
  7. Inform Your Insurance Company: Contact your insurer promptly to report the incident, providing all necessary details and evidence of the situation.

Remember, personal safety is paramount. Do not attempt to drive through or near the fire, and always follow guidance from emergency officials.
