The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has introduced a new regulation effective from January 1, 2026, that mandates replacing traditional emergency warning triangles with a V-16 hazard warning beacon for all vehicles registered in Spain.
From the beginning of 2026, Spanish law will require drivers to carry a DGT-approved V-16 emergency beacon — a flashing orange roof light — to be used in case of breakdowns or accidents. This new device replaces the conventional warning triangles and can be activated without the need to leave the vehicle, enhancing safety on motorways and high-speed roads.
Approved V-16 beacons must comply with specific technical and operational standards, such as emitting a 360° amber flashing light, having a minimum autonomous operation time, and being weather-resistant. Additionally, authorized models will connect to the DGT 3.0 system to transmit the vehicle’s location when activated. Until December 31, 2025, warning triangles are still permissible, but from the start of 2026, only V-16 beacons will be legally accepted.
Failure to comply with this regulation may result in fines, which are reported to range from €80 to €200 for drivers not carrying a compliant device.
DGT Recommendations
Stay ahead of the regulation and enhance your safety on the roads by switching to the new V-16 hazard warning beacon before January 2026.
