Constitution Weekend – December 6th and 8th holidays in Spain

As December arrives, Spain comes alive with two important holidays: Constitution Day on December 6 and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8.

Constitution Day (Día de la Constitución) – December 6, 2024: This holiday marks the anniversary of the approval of the Spanish Constitution in 1978, a landmark moment in Spain’s transition to democracy following years of dictatorship. Celebrated across the nation, Constitution Day features various cultural and political events that underscore the importance of democratic principles and human rights. With schools and businesses closed, citizens have the opportunity to reflect on the significance of the Constitution and to participate in celebrations recognizing this pivotal moment in Spanish history.

Feast of the Immaculate Conception (Día de la Inmaculada Concepción) – December 8, 2024: This religious holiday honors the belief in the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, highlighting her purity and vital role in Christianity. As an important feast day in Spain, many cities hold processions and religious ceremonies. It also marks the official start of the Christmas season for many families, as individuals decorate their homes and prepare for the festivities that follow.

Holiday Observance in 2024: In 2024, December 6 (Constitution Day) falls on a Friday, while December 8 (Feast of the Immaculate Conception) is on a Sunday. Public holidays in Spain that fall on the weekend can sometimes be moved to the nearest weekday, but in this case, both holidays will be observed independently. This arrangement allows for an extended holiday experience, enabling many to enjoy a festive break from December 6 to December 8.

However, as this year as Feast of the Immaculate Conception falls on a Sunday, the day off has been moved to Monday December 9th but only in the autonomous communities of  Andalucia, Aragon, Castilla y Leon, Extremadura and in the region of Murcia.  That means in these place there will be a 4 day long puente running from Friday to Monday, and every where else has a 3 day weekend.

Enjoy this long weekend and we wish you a very happy Día de la Constitución!!
